What’s keeping teachers teaching?: Preliminary results from a recent study (001)
Standardization, instrumentalization, and intensification have elevated stress and burnout among today’s teachers. Self-efficacy and job satisfaction have declined resulting in a teacher shortage. Rather than further exploring conditions resulting in attrition, this presentation shares preliminary results from a recent study of teacher retention highlighting what’s keeping teachers teaching.

Justin Spencer is currently a doctoral candidate earning a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Mercer University. He is currently in his 22nd year of teaching high school English at Starr’s Mill High School in Fayetteville, Georgia. While having spent his entire career so far at Starr’s Mill, Justin has taught English to all four grades but has a preference for teaching sophomores. Justin currently sponsors the school’s online newspaper, The Prowler. Previously, Justin has taught creative writing, hosted the school’s creative writing club, and assisted in publishing the school’s literary-art magazine, Musings. Justin’s scholarly endeavors include exploring curriculum and instruction at the soul-ular level in efforts to improve the mental health and well-being of teachers.
