Books We Read, Books We Teach: Navigating the Gap in Teacher and Student Book Choices (026)
Based on a study of five in-service English teachers, this presentation explores the gap between English teachers’ personal book choices and classroom selections, focusing on how teachers’ beliefs and external pressures shape these decisions. Attendees will learn strategies for aligning personal values with effective, authentic text selections for their students.

Dr. Matthew Sroka is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at Mercer University, an Associate Editor for The Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, and host of the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy Podcast, where he engages with literacy experts to bridge research and practice. A former high school English teacher, his research interests involve exploring the reading habits of teachers and students.
