This presentation provides participants with an overview of a year-long professional development series on ways of teaching refugee students and embedding literacy instruction. Through modeling, participants will learn how to incorporate children’s picture books on refugees in their instruction.

Annmarie Jackson
Annmarie Jackson is an associate professor in the ELE- SPED department at University of North Georgia. Her research interests are teacher development, culturally relevant teaching, English second language instruction, and preservice teachers’ understanding of literacy. She led a mobile afterschool program, which supported the literacy needs of English second language students in Gainesville, GA. Currently, she is co-leading professional development and research on instruction of migrant and refuge students.
Sarah Williams
Sarah Williams is an Associate Professor in the Elementary and Special Education Department at the University of North Georgia. Her research interests are culturally sustaining teaching practices, refugee literacy education, preservice teacher experiences and literacy instruction, and multimodal writing.
