Today’s students face an ever-growing list of challenges that imperil social-emotional development and educational outcomes. This interactive session will provide attendees with ideas for how to employ critical literacy dimensions to enhance engagement, with an emphasis on providing students with opportunities to construct meaning through personal narrative writing.

Nick Helfrick is a high school educator in Jefferson, GA, who is in his thirteenth year teaching English, primarily American Literature. He holds an Ed.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kennesaw State University. His research interests include critical literacy, standards-based assessment, and education policy. He is married to his high-school sweetheart, Kelly, and is thrilled to be welcoming his first son, Isaac, in early 2025.
