Community is the New Curriculum: Making Space in the Standards for Youth Research and Researchers (003)
New standards are a new opportunity to recreate English language arts with youth and community rather than for youth and their communities. This workshop is led by high school youth researchers with advice and curricular resources they have developed for Georgia’s English teachers aligned with the new GADOE standards.

Lisa York is in her nineteenth year of teaching high school ELA. She is also a PhD student in Georgia State University’s Teaching and Learning program. Drawing inspiration from culturally sustaining pedagogies (Paris & Alim, 2017), her areas of interest include critical literacies, decolonized curricula, place-based pedagogies, ad supporting and retaining diverse teachers.
Leah Panther is an Associate Professor of Literacy Education at Mercer University. Lisa York is a doctoral student at Georgia State University and a current high school English teacher in DeKalb County. Kimberly Stephens is a doctoral student at Mercer University and current middle school English Language Arts teacher in Clayton County. All three are part of the Linguistic Justice Collaborative along with youth researchers Akosua, Anela, Andes, Maxon, Navah, Sabina, Samira, Siham, Shaila, and Tajrian.
